ART on the Plaza

Dear Sculptor,

As we begin preparations for this year’s Celebrate the Arts Month in Sheridan, voted #1 Western Town in America, we invite you to submit your work for our public exhibit. ART on the Plaza is an ongoing exhibit in the downtown area of Sheridan, Wyoming. This outdoor sculpture exhibit is free to the public and includes sculptures in a variety of media and styles. Some of the pieces are part of our permanent collection, and some are on loan from artists such as you.

ART on the Plaza is managed by the Sheridan Public Arts Committee, individuals appointed by the Mayor and City Council of Sheridan. The Committee is responsible for the development and promotion of the exhibit. One goal of the Committee is to add to our permanent collection on an annual basis. As part of this year’s celebration, we will be dedicating the newest additions to our permanent collection. Artists’ on loan works displayed this past year include Bill Noland, Mary Zimmerman, Sondra Jonson, Dellores Shelledy, Susan Geissler, Jerold Smiley, Robert Deurloo, Bobbie Carlyle, Malin Pierson, Chon Love, Mary Michael, Bunny Hanley, and Joe Burleigh. A second goal is to complement our permanent collection with our ongoing exhibition of works from artists such as you. A third goal is to develop an outdoor gallery where the works of artists such as your can be sold to the general public. View at sheridanpublicarts.com. Six of 12 sold in 2006 and already 6 are sold in the 2007 exhibit.

This year, participating artists will meet in Sheridan on Thursday, June 12, 2008, to install their works. Art supporters and community members will be invited to watch the installation and meet with the artists who have created the works on display. All of the artists selected to exhibit new sculpture will each be awarded a $500 honorarium. All participating artists will be provided one night’s free hotel room. Weekend activities include in-store artists, permanent sculpture dedication, a community picnic, and a golf tournament to benefit the Public Arts Committee Permanent Acquisition Fund. In 2007, over $10,000 was raised.

ART on the Plaza is a public project; all proposed works will be screened to insure durability and artistic merit prior to acceptance. Fragile, dangerous or inappropriate works will not be accepted. There is no limit to the number of works you choose to submit.

Please use the attached form as an application/entry form and contract to participate. After receiving your completed application, the Sheridan Public Arts Committee will send you confirmation and more specific information on this year’s events.
